Dr. Alessandro Riccombeni, MBA

Alessandro had the Precision Medicine and Genomics market development lead for the Public Sector at Healthcare Amazon Web Services and is today National Genomics Officer for Microsoft in London.

Alessandro started his career in Biotechnologies, working on drug development at the University of Lisbon. He moved to the “dry lab” at the European Oncology Institute in Milan, where he studied human-specific cancer genes. During his PhD at University College Dublin he specialised in Next-Generation Sequencing and Computational Infection Biology. Moving to Industry, Dr. Riccombeni at Illumina developed new methods for detecting chromosomal rearrangements. After leading product strategy for a PaaS, he created the bioinformatics unit and CRISPR-based services at Horizon Discovery, before joining DNAnexus, a Google and Microsoft-backed Silicon Valley company, to set up its EMEA operations and create its Clinical Diagnostics segment. Here he was directly involved in many of the most ambitious Population Genomics projects worldwide. In 2019 Amazon Web Services asked Dr. Riccombeni to create its Genomics business in Public Sector Healthcare, and he is currently responsible for AWS’ market strategy and offering for Precision Medicine and Genomics in EMEA. Since 2015, Dr. Riccombeni provides coaching and pro bono consulting for entrepreneurs in Cambridge’s Silicon Fen. He is an advisor to the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health. He holds an MBA from London Business School.
